My hair journey, just like every other black girl, has barely been a walk in the park. Growing up, I always had relaxed hair and people would always compliment me on how long it was but I still didn’t like my hair. It was super flat, lifeless and I felt like it made my forehead bigger than it already was. So I had to do something about that and that’s when I stopped relaxing my hair and chopped the rest off in 2013. Solange Knowles was also my inspiration and motivation to go natural. It was during a time where black girls were starting to realize their worth and enjoy their natural beauty more so I didn’t want to get left behind!
I honestly had no game plan for taking care of this new textured hair. I mean, I didn’t even know what to expect, I had been relaxing my hair since I could barely spell “hair”.
Ever since the big transition, my hair has had its ups and downs but I’m still loyal to its natural state. Sometimes I feel like my hair is the best thing since grated cheese but at times, I feel like my hair just doesn’t do it for me and I have to wear a head wrap or wig to cover it up. I maintain/protect my hair through many styles such as; braids, wigs, free hand stretching styles and wearing a doek. In the last 6 months, my hair has gotten much softer, stronger and more manageable as a result of changing my hair products. It’s very important that you don’t use products that contain harsh chemicals, parabens, sulphates etc (Thanks to some hair blogs and tutorials for this information). The best advice I’ve heard is that you need to listen to your hair and give it the attention it needs. If your hair is feeling dry and brittle, it’s telling you to moisturize sis!
Natural hair is such an intense and complex journey but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
